#AppMonday – Animoto App

With the update of the iPod Touch just released (Apple iPod Touch), I thought that today’s #AppMonday pick is perfect.  Animoto is a web2.0 site for video creation.  Using pictures from your computer and music too you can create a very professional looking video slideshow in under 10 minutes!  Check out my review of it here:  Animoto.

The Animoto iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad app is available only for those devices that are running iOS 4.0, but those that do have a great amount they can do with it.  The first option is to watch videos that you have created online, on your iDevice, you can even download the videos to watch them when not connected to the internet.  You can also use your iDevice to create a new video.  Using photos & music already on your iDevice you can make a video of up to 30 seconds for free accounts, any length for educator accounts.

The update to the iPod Touch is exciting because now students can take photos of a trip, around school, or a project, and use those photos to create an Animoto video.  Just imagine to possibilities available!  I’ve always felt that iDevices have been great ways to consume content, but lacked a way to effectively create it.  The Animoto app is one app that bridges that gap.

Animoto is a free app from the iTunes store, and integrates with your free or educator account.

iPod Touch updates

Apple recently announced that they would be updating their line of iPod Touches, Shuffles & Nanos.  They’ve shrunk some devices (Nano), added back buttons (Shuffle), and updated the iPod Touch so it is truly an iPhone without the phone.

The iPod Touch might not be the most radical update (see the Nano), but I think it’s the most significant. The iPod Touch will come come standard with 2 cameras, front and back, which will allow it to use Facetime, as well as take video & photos.  This will exponentially increase the usability of apps like iCommunicate, Proloquo2go, First/Then Schedules, iPrompts & Animoto (see why on Monday!), by allowing users to instantly add photos, usually from inside the app.

They have also upgraded the display, the processor & battery life (40 hours for music playback, 7 hours for video) Apple is selling the 8GB iPod Touch for $229, 32GB for $299, & 64GB for $399.

#AppMonday – TapSpeak Button

The iPod Touch, iPhone & iPad have shown that they are great platforms for communication.  While they may not be right for all students (that’s what we have SETT), they work for some.  Here’s another great app for communication.  TapSpeak Button, developed by Conley Solutions, it was created to help his son with Cerebral Palsy communication.  The premise of TapSpeak Button is simple – it’s a single-hit switch.  That’s it, it can play a single message.  Now it comes with some nice features. It can remember multiple messages, in fact it remembers all that you have programmed (so no re-recording mid-session!). You can also change the color of the button.  It has a very simple interface:

Add a name and tap the button to record.  This program does require some kind of microphone to record.  So if you have an iPhone or iPad your set, iPod Touch users will need to purchase one before you can use the program.  There is a list of ones they recommend here – Microphones.  The app is $9.99 and well worth the money!  Recently they have released TapSpeak Sequences!  This app allows does exactly what it sounds like – it’s a step-by-step switch!  It’s a little more expensive at $29.99, but if is as good as TapSpeak button it’s worth the money.
After speaking with Ted Conley he informed me of some of the upcoming features being added to both TapSpeak Button & TapSpeak Sequence.  Both apps are available on the iPad and work very well due to the larger form factor.  TapSpeak button will be gaining the picture/symbol library that is currently available on TapSpeak Sequence.  Also, TapSpeak Sequence will have the option to purchase the Dynavox PCS library through an in-app purchase, this will be available in a couple of weeks!  In my opinion that makes both of these apps even more useful.
Ted has offered 3 FREE codes for TapSpeak Button!  Be one of the first 3 people to comment on this post and I’ll send one to you!

Guest Post – So you have an idea for an app…

Today’s post is guest post from the creator/developer of the iPhone app – iCommunicate (see my review here – #appmonday – iCommunicate).

Patrick

So you have an idea for an iPhone app. But now how do you take this idea and get it developed and distributed to the people who you know need it?
Remember the idea is the most important part. You were inspired by something you saw around you at work everyday, or something that touched you personally, or you have the next big idea waiting to explode onto the market.
You really have two options if you want to get your app published.
One, go it alone, download the necessary SDK(Software Development Kit) for $99.00 for an individual and learn how to register with Apple. Setup your development environment. Play with samples and emulators in your free time. Then start developing your app and use Google search as your guide when you get stuck. This is a very difficult way to get it done, and it will probably take more than 6 months and you may be frustrated weekly. It took me two months to get up to speed on developing for the iPhone and I have a computer science degree and 12 years experience. If you want to get some developing skills you can take an Objective-C programming class or an intro to iPhone development class.
Or two, hire someone like me who has done all this before many times. Someone who knows how to register you properly, what questions to ask before the app even starts to get developed, what information and images you will need before you can even submit the finished app, give you a beta version of what you envisioned, so you can make late tweaks to the app, and who knows the ins and outs of submitting apps and getting them approved. A developer you hire should also know how to do updates and improvements quickly and efficiently. Depending on the app you can get a finished product in as little as a month for a somewhat simple app, to many months for more complex apps.
The key to getting any software done is to have requirements written down before you even meet or contact a developer. A basic idea of how you want the screens in your app to flow and look. You can even sketch out what the screens would look like. If the app is going to have lots of graphics or images, having these done beforehand can speed things up, as otherwise a developer needs to hire a graphic designer too, and wait for that work to be compete before the app can be finished. The more prepared and well thought out your idea is, the better chance a developer will take on your project. Remember you may need to sell your idea to the developer.
Good luck with your ideas and always feel free to contact us with any questions you have about the app development process.

Moms with Apps

I’m always on the lookout for sites which review iPhone/iPod/iPad Touch apps.  As we all know there are now over 150,000 apps, and not all of them are good!  Lately I’ve been reading Moms with Apps.  It’s a great review site with lots of info on fun and useful apps for moms on the go!  They also take the time to review educational apps too!  Recently they’ve featured Arithmaroo’s Instant Counting, and Eric Sailer’s iPad app ArtikPix.  Every Friday they feature an app, and usually have free copies available!  Make sure to add Moms with Apps to your reader!

#AppMonday – PicPocket Books

While I’m still eagerly awaiting the release of the Blio ereader, until then let’s check out PicPocket Books.  They have a great line of book apps for your iPhone or iPod Touch & will probably work on the iPad, although I haven’t seen any information on them being optimized for it yet.  There are 27 titles and they even have some in Spanish. All the titles include Text-to-Speech, text highlighting as it is read, and some even have interactive features.  The books are fun to read, and PicPocket Books has a mix of original books to classics.  They are quite reasonable at $.99-$3.99 per book.  Check some out today!

#AppMonday – iCommunicate

I came across iCommunicate ($4.99) while getting ready for my latest workshop.  iCommunicate is a program that helps you create “storyboards”.  It comes with a  set of pictures, but you can easily add more from your photo library stored on your iPod Touch or iPhone.  You can use the storyboards to create social stories as well as schedules.  At this time you can save up to 40 photos for each storyboard  For an additional $4.99 in-app purchase you can add custom audio to your storyboards.  The user interface is easy to use, and it’s very simple to create and modify storyboards.  They are saved, so you can reuse them.  One feature that I’d like to see added (suggested by someone at my workshop) would be some way to mark pictures as done (which they are working on but it will take some time).

The developers of iCommunicate are a husband and wife team, Grembe, Inc.  They have 2 other apps – iReward and iConnect.  I’ve not tried either of those programs, but if they are anything like iCommunicate they are well done.
