Majority of States Submit Race to the Top Applications

The U.S. Department of Education announced that 40 states and the District of Columbia submitted applications to be considered for the first phase of the Race to the Top (RTTT) competition. The Race to the Top fund – which was authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the economic stimulus package – is a $4.35 billion program intended to provide states with funding to implement reforms in education. Race to the Top Application Deadline Nears; Program Provides Funding for Education Reforms

January 19th marks the deadline for States to apply to the U.S. Department of Education’s Race to the Top Fund, a $4.35 billion initiative established last year by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), better known as the economic stimulus package. U.S. Department of Education Changes Grant Program Targeting Lowest Achieving Schools

The U.S. Department of Education has issued final requirements for the School Improvement Grant (SIG) program, a $3.5 billion initiative funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the economic stimulus package. The SIG program seeks to reform the lowest-achieving schools in the nation by implementing changes to improve school culture and student achievement outcomes. While CEC commends the Department for its efforts to improve our nation’s lowest performing schools, CEC believes that many SIG program requirements remain punitive rather than supportive in nature.
